Equator Village, Maldives

Equator Village

Your decision to visit Addu Atoll is a choice see a very different side of the Maldives. It is certainly not the usual tourist experience.Your hour-long flight from Male’ International Airport to Gan will be unforgettable. From a vantage point up in the sky, you will see Atoll formations, islands, and of course, the blue ocean glittering below you. Before landing in Gan, you will notice that the island is larger than the usual Maldivian isle. With its very substantial length of 5 km and width of 3 kilometres, it is what we would call a ‘real island’. The resort, nestled in a sleepy corner of the island about 1km away from the airport, is called the Equator Village because it is situated on one of the rare Maldivian resorts lying south of the Zero Degree Latitude.
All the islands in Addu Atoll are connected via a series of causeways. The length of all the Addu islands come up to approximately 18 kilometres. Gan, which is one of the four largest islands, has a population of 25,000. Since this allows you a rare tourist opportunity to interact with locals, excursions are a must, in order for you to get an impression of the real way of life of Maldivians.

Area Attractions

About 25 metres from the resort beach is a house reef, which is a great place to go snorkelling. The reef is rich in colour - both coral and fish, but for the more experienced adventurers, there is a fully equipped dive base at the resort as well.

The diving base offers PADI Open Water and Advanced courses. They have instructorswell versed in the dive sites of the area, and are happy to escort you to themany amazing dive spots around Addu Atoll. The distance of Addu to Male? andother resorts mean the dive sites are very unspoiled and undisturbed.

Divers who expect an abundance of reef fish may be disappointed with Addoo Atoll. But those who want to see wrecks, large manta rays, Sharks, turtles and generally big fish all year around, well be delighted with the diving. There are four kandus in the atoll: Gan kandu, Viligili Kandu, Maa Kandu and Kuda Kandu.

Currents are generally not as strong as in the other atolls so the channels can be dived at the most times. Depths inside the atoll average around 35 meters but it reaches a maximum of 75 meters in the middle.
